Cemeteries

Republic Cemetery

A train bridge in the little town of Republic passes by a small cemetery. Late at night, mysterious lights are seen on the bridge’s span.

It’s not known whether this has something to do with the railroad, the cemetery, or both.

Try Findagrave.com. There are cemeteries listed there and if you can’t find the name within the cemetery, there are volunteers who may accept locating/photographing if you post a request.

  3. On January 4, 1887, a passenger train crashed head-on with a stalled freight train on the tracks near the cemetery. Between the resulting fire and below-zero temperatures, over a dozen people lost their lives (many of whom were burned alive in the destroyed cars). At the time, it was the worst wreck in the history of the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.

Within a short time of the accident, reports of a “ghost train” started turning up in local newspapers. A red lantern light–used to signal other trains of danger–appeared several times to trains passing in the area, but it vanished as soon as they stopped.

You need to contact the Scipio Township Trustees. They have the plot information. I will direct the clerk to this site.
